Whether you’re n aspiring executive or simply interested in leading with purpose, she offers valuable lessons on authenticity, creativity, and meaningful leadership. Sheri emphasizes that her path to the top has been about more than just climbing the career ladder — it’s about creating impact, driving innovation, and staying true to her authentic self.
Sheri’s story began when she stumbled into the association world after college, not knowing it would become her lifelong career. She started as an assistant conference manager at the International Economic Development Council and quickly rose through the ranks, taking on roles such as conference manager, director of certification, and senior director of education and certification. This diverse experience exposed her to all facets of association management, which she believes was crucial in preparing her for future leadership positions.
In 2006, Sheri took on her first vice president role at the International Board of Heart Rhythm Examiners, a small organization with a million-dollar operating revenue. This experience, which she describes as her “first stint” as senior staff, taught her the importance of developing a strong relationship with the board of directors — a skill she has continued to hone throughout her career.
Sheri’s subsequent role after VP of Business Operations at the Heart Rhythm Society as the CEO of the American College of Nurse Midwives further solidified her belief that the CEO-board chair relationship is one of the most crucial factors in a leader’s success. She emphasizes the need for transparency, trust, and a shared vision between the CEO and the board, especially as organizations navigate complex political, economic, and social landscapes.
Reflecting on her journey, Sheri emphasizes the importance of self-awareness, continuous learning, and adaptability. She encourages aspiring leaders to embrace challenges, be open to stretch assignments, and continually investing in their own professional development. Sheri also highlights the value of networking, mentorship, and building a supportive community of peers and colleagues.
One of Sheri’s most impactful insights is the importance of overcoming self-doubt and embracing one’s abilities. She shares that it took her years to recognize her own potential, and she wishes she had been more confident in her skills earlier on. Sheri’s advice to her younger self — “You’re the one. You can do this. Stop doubting yourself” — resonates as a powerful message for all aspiring leaders.
Sheri underscores the evolving nature of leadership, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. She emphasizes the need for empathy, flexibility, and a deep understanding of the experiences and challenges faced by one’s team members. By adapting her leadership style to the changing landscape, Sheri has demonstrated the resilience and adaptability that are hallmarks of successful CEOs.
